Tonal alignment, scaling and slope in Italian question and statement tunes

چکیده

Unlike in languages such as English and Standard Italian, the Italian spoken in Naples shares with other Southern varieties the use of a very similar rising-falling (LHL) tune for both yes/no questions and narrow focus statements (D'Imperio, 2001; Grice et al., to appear). However, it has been claimed that the temporal alignment of the accent peak is later in the pitch accent of yes/no questions (L*+H) than in that of statements (L+H*) and that this alignment difference is employed by native speakers to perceptually identify the two tunes (D’Imperio and House, 1997). This study acoustically tested the hypothesis that all three tonal targets of the rise-fall are timed and scaled differently in questions and statements. Moreover, slope differences for both rise and fall were also tested by employing logistic regression modeling. Two speakers of Neapolitan Italian produced utterances whose target words differed in question/statement modality, syllable structure and segmental environment. The results show that all three targets within the rise-fall are timed later in questions than in statements. By contrast, no systematic difference was found for the slope of the rise nor for the slope of the fall. The exact contribution of F0 height to signaling the contrast could not be determined, though. In fact, while one speaker marked the difference by producing higher peaks for statements, the other did not produce any difference.

Early Acquisition of F0 Alignment and Scaling Patterns in Catalan and Spanish

Six Catalan-speaking and six Spanish-speaking children between the ages of 24 and 48 months participated in a controlled naming task to elicit statement intonation patterns. A total of 127 utterances were prosodically analyzed using Cat_ToBI and Sp_ToBI ([1], [2]) and phonetic analyses of tonal alignment and scaling were performed. Our results show that children as young as two can finely contr...

Phonetic and phonological imitation of intonation in two varieties of Italian

The aim of this study was to test whether both phonetic and phonological representations of intonation can be rapidly modified when imitating utterances belonging to a different regional variety of the same language. Our main hypothesis was that tonal alignment, just as other phonetic features of speech, would be rapidly modified by Italian speakers when imitating pitch accents of a different (...

Native language influences in focus intonation: analysis of tonal alignment in Italian and German productions of Italian speakers of Lecce (South Italy)

Productions in a foreign language (L2) are commonly affected by segmental and suprasegmental features of the phonetic/phonological system of the mother tongue (L1). As for the segmental level, the sounds of the L2, which are close or similar to others of the L1, are deeply influenced by the native system; these influences are perceived as foreign accent but could also be acceptable from the poi...

Tonal Structure and Pitch Targets in Italian Focus Constituents

This work investigates the tonal structure of the focal accent in narrow focus statements of Neapolitan Italian. The formal properties of this accent lend themselves to two competing analyses. Specifically, this accent could equally be described as a HL accentual fall or as a LH rise. The two analyses were evaluated on the basis of a set of utterances containing focus constituents with varying ...

Are There "Shapers" and "Aligners"? Individual Differences in Signalling Pitch Accent Category

One of the most studied phonetic dimensions differentiating pitch accent categories is tonal alignment. However, when acoustic alignment data are broken down by individual patterns, one can notice great differences both in the size of the contrast as well as in the dispersion of the temporal values. Moreover, speakers appear to compensate for weaker alignment differences by enhancing shape diff...
